    Kalinga-era sailors departed this coast for Java, Sumatra and Bali carrying textiles and spices — a trade legacy still visible in Andhra's cultural ties.

    Simhachalam takes the hill

    The temple of Varaha Narasimha is established — one of South India's major Vaishnavite shrines, still active today.

    Vizag grows modestly as a port town under British rule; its natural harbor gains strategic and shipping importance.

    Scindia Shipyard — later Hindustan Shipyard — is founded here, the country's first shipbuilding yard.

    The Eastern Naval Command is headquartered in Vizag, anchoring India's naval and submarine-building strength on the east coast.

    Steel at scale

    Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (RINL) is commissioned — one of India's largest public-sector steel plants.

Name origin: "Visakhapatnam" is believed to derive from Lord Vishakha, a form associated with Kartikeya / Subrahmanyeswara.
